Reflecting on my Action Research

This active research study not only increased my students’ enthusiasm for learning ,but it also rekindled my excitement for teaching. Initially , I was  extremely apprehensive and began to question the feasibility of the study. Once I began, however, I found myself looking forward to the hectic pace and the commotion that resulted in a positive learning environment in my classroom.
After completion of this project, I would like to continue to develop the idea of cooperative learning.  My study has convinced me that there are many benefits that can be gained when students work together. The exchange of different ideas and strategies can be beneficial to all students. This exchange of different strategies allows the students to look at problems through another’s perspective. I will share these ideas from my findings in this action project with other teachers who are interested in developing group learning.  I found that it is important to pay attention to which students are placed together in groups. Some students can work with many other students, but there will always be those few who have difficulty contributing to a group atmosphere. It is also very important to teach the students how to work cooperatively together. When I start my teaching career, I would like to spend a little more time showing students how to work cooperatively in a group and learning how to help students who have trouble working in groups. Students need to feel comfortable working with other members of the group. I am interested in creating team building activities as a feasible way of creating a positive learning environment.

it has been a great experience and I have benefited a lot from this.

Action research...

The work has finally started, after spending a lot of my time deciding on what to do for my action research. My topic of my action research is collaborative learning.  I am thinking of   introducing a different way of how I learners work in the class.  Learners will be asked to work together in small groups.

During my initial stage of my action research, I have faced a few barriers, these include: vague research idea and lack of time.  Deciding on my idea was not easy. I kept changing from one idea to the other.

First data collection

I have observed my learners working in small group to complete a task. The activity went real;y well and learners seemed to enjoy working with each in groups. However I must admit that some learners seemed to dominate the group and those learners who are normally very quite did not contribute much. However, when I noticed this, I immediately, asked the learners to make sure everyone takes part in the activity.  This did made a difference, as all learners joined in and cooperated well.

Data analysis

In last week's session, I had the opportunity to learn about analysing my research data. This was very helpful because now I am very confident about analysing my data.  The only issue I am having at the moment is managing my time well.

It is decided....Action research here I come...

It is decided....Action research here I come...

Diary 17/02/2014

After doing a lot of thinking and researching, finally I have  decided what I want to do for my Action research.  The topic for my action research is going to be collaborative learning.  It is not going to be as easy as it sound, the idea is great but how to go on about it is another thing.

I am thinking of thinking of answering this question :what happens to students learning in my class when use collaborative learning approach

I am actually looking forward to this.

It is a busy life being a teacher....

Self-Evaluation...

One thing that I have come to value during my teaching practice is self-evaluation. Self-evaluation is very important part of every lesson even though it typically takes place after the lesson is over. It requires me to think back on my lesson and consider the following questions:

  • What went well and why?
  • What problem did I experience?
  • What could I have done differently?
  • What have I learnt from the experience that will help me in the future?

Sometimes, in rush of teaching, I do get tempted to skip my self-evaluation. However I have come to realise that self-evaluation is a powerful tool that will help me become a better teacher. Reflecting and evaluating my teaching after a lesson is over will give me insights that may save me lots of trouble later. Even a few brief evaluative notes  on a lesson plan will help me immensely the next time I teach that lesson.

I am often surprised by how much I forget if I do not write my ideas down and end up making the same mistakes over and over again. However, I am always surprised at how a few minutes of reflective writing help me discover things I would have otherwise not noticed.

Hence evaluating my teaching regularly will definitely help me develop into a better teacher.

Keep evaluating my teaching practice! way to go..

So, A lot of things have happened...

This past week I was introduced to three new modules; Contemporary issues, Action Research and Teaching inclusively and Reflecting on practice.

It is going to be  very busy over the coming few weeks.

In contemporary issues I ma required to produce a poster and a write a report on a contemporary issue of my choice. I have an idea of what I want to do but I still  haven't made up my mind yet, time is running out too. I am thinking of doing something about  MDGs goal 3. MDGs stand for Millennium development goals. MDGs are eight international goals that were established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000.

Therefore  this will mean looking at the progress of goal 3, has the world managed to provide gender equal opportunities.

I am also required to carry out an Action research in my own placement. Choosing a topic is quite difficult. I am thinking of implementing peer assessment or group work in my classroom. This is going to be so challenging! Although it is going to be difficult, I am actually looking forward to it.

Time to reflect on my teaching....

After a number of day of rambling through new ideas, theories and strategies, it is time  to actually sit down and reflect on how to improve  the learning that takes place in my lessons. it is time to rethink the way I deliver my lessons. It is time  to think about designing lessons that get the best out of my students. It is time to come up with a plan.....about planning.

On Monday this week, I had to fill in an action plan for further development as a result of my grading activity. I must say the results were not what I had expected. I realised that there are so many things that I need to work on in order to make my teaching better. I did put down few things in the PDR and identified areas I need to improve  and how I will go on to overcome these.

One thing that I really need to work on is encouraging group discussion during my lessons. fostering small group discussion in my lesson is my target!!...

How hard can it be?...

Diary of w/c 6th of Jan-10th of Jan

I have been so busy that I haven't even have enough time to keep my blog up to date. Last week was my first week back at college. Too much is going on at the  moment, but I am always up for the challenge!

Few things have happened this past week., and I must say  I have learnt a lot. The following are some of the things that I have found very interesting and very useful too:

  • Positive correction behaviour management approach by Carl Rogers
  • Different teaching strategies
  • Formative assessment, the video below shows one of my favourite theorists on assessment, Dylan William

Formative Assessment and feedback: Dylan William!

Christmas has come and gone....time flies

I cant' believe that my Christmas break is already over! I have very busy these past two week  with all the Christmassy activities, college work and lesson planning , that I didn't even get a chance to update my blog.

Next week I go back to college. I have lots to do before then. There is my behaviour management presentation to prepare, two lessons and one assignment to complete.

Anyway I have enjoyed my short break and I am looking forward to going back into my usual routine...

Good luck :)
